Where there's always a warm welcome!

Home Page

Welcome to our Club!

The Rotary Club of Sugarmill Woods is the newest Rotary Club in Citrus County and in Rotary District 6950. Our club was established in November 2008 and received its Charter in January 2009. The club's primary focus is literacy and we proudly support the Lecanto Primary School which includes working with disadvantaged youth at the school.

Our membership is growing but we are still looking for people like you, with an ardent desire to "make a difference", to join us. Individuals who enjoy getting involved in projects that benefit our community. We meet at Sugarmill Woods Country Club every Tuesday at 4.45 pm for fun and fellowship. We have fabulous speakers most weeks covering an array of diverse topics. Even if you don't want to join Rotary at this time you are always most welcome to come and listen to the speaker. For more information about becoming a member call George Meadows on 352 503 6173

A Rotarian from Tyneside in England, John Bower, and his lovely wife Linda attended our meeting on November 15th. John and Linda are seen here being presented with our clubs' pennant to take back to their club in the UK. The fellowship of Rotarians around the globe is what makes membership in Rotary so rewarding. To see what they do "over the pond" click this link, Tyneside Rotary, to visit John's club website.

As a surprise to the members of the Rotary Club of Sugarmill Woods, President Ken Steidel and Rotarian Barbara Reedy arranged for Shriners clowns Roustabout and Doodles to arrive unannounced at last weeks’ meeting. Beginning with a few of their repertoire of clown behavior, the members were smiling and trying to figure out what it was all about. At that time, Roustabout who is Lt. Col of a Virginia unit presented a history of Shriners and their best known charitable project, the Shriners Hospitals for Children®. The nearest hospital is in Tampa located adjacent to the campus of University of South Florida, allowing them to share world-class doctors and provide unique teaching opportunities. Shriners Hospital for Children focus on treating children with a host of orthopaedic and neuromusculoskeletal conditions in an environment designed to put children at ease. Every member of our staff, from surgeons to therapists, nurses to orthotists, is focused on providing the highest quality care for the child and the family.

Rotarian Barbara Reedy told us that Roustabout doesn’t clown much anymore and is responsible for the lineup in the parades. Doodles is a member of the Shriners Circus and takes part in parades. He states that it is a joy to bring smiles to children of all ages. Members were delighted with this program as they learned more about Shriners hospitals for children.

                      SERVICE Above Self

Rotary is a worldwide organization of business and professional leaders that provides humanitarian service, encourages high ethical standards in all vocations, and helps build goodwill and peace in the world. Approximately 1.2 million Rotarians belong to more than 32,000 clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas.

Rotary club membership represents a cross-section of the community's business and professional men and women. The world's Rotary clubs meet weekly and are nonpolitical, nonreligious, and open to all cultures, races, and creeds. The main objective of Rotary is service - in the community, in the workplace, and throughout the world. Rotarians develop community service projects that address many of today's most critical issues, such as children at risk, poverty and hunger, the environment, illiteracy, and violence. They also support programs for youth, educational opportunities and international exchanges for students, teachers, and other professionals, and vocational and career development. The Rotary motto is Service Above Self.

The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International is a not-for-profit corporation that promotes world understanding through international humanitarian service programs and educational and cultural exchanges. It is supported solely by voluntary contributions from Rotarians and others who share its vision of a better world.
